The Africa Club of Queensland

July 2011 Newsletter - ACQ Members Club

Firstly let me apologise for not going to be at the July Monthly meeting. Jackie and I are taking a very well deserved break to the wonderful Margaret River in WA and we look forward to seeing some old friends over there and tasting some really good red wine.

Now anyone can buy me a slice of cheese to go with this whine, because I'm going to have one!

At a recent social event I was deeply offended by a person, non member of the ACQ, who told me to my face that this is now MY club and not Morne's club! Newsflash, it is not my club, nor was it EVER Morne's or anyone elses club for that matter.

I have mentioned in recent newsletters that this is a MEMBERS club, without members we may as well shut down shop! This club is in existence to help and assist fellow country men & women, it is the basis of its foundation and should be seen and treated in that way. This is not an individuals' attempt at popularity or ego trip.

This club is bigger than any member, committee member or President etc, past or present and for those of you who didn't read the History of the ACQ in a previous newsletter, this club was formed 28 years ago to support a young South African lady in need of sponsor to assist her with fund raising for a beauty pageant and it grew from there.

28 YEARS ago!!! Now we exist to help more and more new migrants with their settling in process be it with advise or moral support and even in cases with the nitty gritty, cups, saucers, pots & pans. We have members who are prepared to lend a spare fridge or even a bed or two with or without blankets!!!

Let me share another piece of information with you all, now that I'm on a roll, if we have enough members we can get a grant from the State Government and we might be able to get our own facilities where we can have our meetings and grow from there but that's NOT going to happen if we all sit on our hands. How the heck are we going to achieve that if everyone joins the Facebook page and sits there without becoming members! We have over 400 FB members and not even 50 paid up ACQ members for 2011. How the heck can that be? Go figure, we have a database of nearly 800 people and send this newsletter to more than 500 people and still we only have less than 10% as paid up members! Is this the type of apathy a previous contributor has spoken about?

I don't care about getting or gaining anything from this club but I don't want to see it being reduced to that sort of carry on and I would like it if we could work together to make this a place and event we can all have fun and remain within our our community.

This is the last time I'm going to give this subject any air time.

We will need an indication of how many people are interested in the Potjiekos day which we are planning to hold at Alison and Gerards' place on Tamborine Mountain on the 21st August 2011.

Those who don't want to or can't male a potjie, we'll feed you for a small fee, the amoutn to be confirmed but it will be in the $5-$10 per person range.

I would like to see a RSVP to the club email info@africaclub.org.au so we can have an idea of the numbers.

Moreton Island Adventures

Main Content Inline Small

Good Morning,

We are Moreton Island Adventures and have a vehicular ferry which runs to Moreton Island each day.  Over the last six months we have noticed something very special.  We have noticed that there are more and more South African families and couples travelling to Moreton Island for four wheel driving, camping holidays.

Our limited research has revealed that the adventurous nature of Moreton Island appeals greatly to South Africans due to similarities in terrains back home and that South Africans are adventurous by nature.

Having said that, we would like to start working with you to provide some specific specials for your Club and your members.  We are happy to meet with you at any time to discuss sponsorship opportunities and even presentations about Moreton Island to your members and wider community.

Our website is www.moretonislandadventures.com.au and we are also on Facebook.  See link below.  Let me know if you are interested in working with us to provide your members with great deals.  I have attached one photo of Moreton Island as a bit of a teaser!

Moreton Island is only 75 minutes from Brisbane.

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Kind regards,

Angela.

Barry (Cousin) Hilton

Hi ACQ,

I am part of a group bringing South African comedian Barry Hilton to Australia for a tour.
I have attached the flyer - as you can see, he will be doing two shows in Queensland.
I'd love to chat about sending the flyer out to your database. Perhaps I can offer some free tickets in return?
I look forward to your thoughts.

Kind regards

Rhodesian Pensioners - ZPSF June 2011 trip report

Dear Sir,

A quick update on what we are up to. The 2 trucks left Malelane on the 13th June with Attie & Boet arriving back on Friday the 24th and Hannes getting back on Tuesday the 28th. It was a slightly longer than usual trip due to us having one of our supporters from New Zealand with Hannes on the first part of his Bulawayo route. Then later we had Cheryl fly in from Dubai to see the end piece of Atties trip as well the final deliveries that Hannes was doing. All in all it was a good trip and will hopefully generate some publicity. We have just over a month till the August trip. Please visit our web page for more photos of the June trip.

We have a family of 5 in Zims that we support and they are in desperate need of a bunk bed. All 5 of them live in the outside room so space is a big issue. If anyone can help please contact me. We also have a request for children’s clothing.

We are currently supporting just over 1650 pensioners in 28 homes, this is about 40% of our target base. We also support SOAP in Bulawayo and have helped to set up a system similar to SOAP in Gweru, Zvishavane, Masvingo, Red Cliff, Kwe Kwe and Kadoma to cater for pensioners that are not in old age homes as well.  We are an officially registered Non Profit Organization (Section 21A) in South Africa and are registered with SARS as a Public Benefit Organization in terms of section 18A the Income Tax Act (Which means all donations are issued with a Tax Certificate and can be claimed back). PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE A TAX CERTIFICATE STATING ALL YOU DONATIONS.

Our web page is http://zpsf.terapad.com, all updates are also loaded directly onto our site. We also have a Face Book group and Cause Page as well, please look us up. We welcome anyone who wishes to come and see our warehouse and what we do. We also finally have a PayPal account that is open and linked to our web page.

We appreciate any and all support received as every little bit helps us to assist the people of Zimbabwe. As you are aware it is solely your donations that keep us running. Please if you have already supported us could you supply me with the details as we are battling to acknowledge all donations received and believe in acknowledging all support. PLEASE IF YOU DO DONATE IF YOU CAN USE YOUR PHONE NO. AS A REFERANCE SO THAT WE CAN TRACE THE PAYMENT CORRECTLY.

Once again a VERY BIG THANK YOU to all our supporters. May GOD bless you all.

Kind Regards

Kom laat ons sing

Hi Leon,
I don’t know if you are the same Leon Stevens I used to know from the VAAL TRIANGLE in South Africa.
I am based in Vereeniging RSA, and own a recording studio and I manage up & coming Artist & Bands. I have recorded a few artists over the past 22 years and some of them has moved on to become Big names in RSA.
I have just finished a CD album for a 16 year old girl “CHRISTI”and  I believe she is bound to become big in RSA.  I would like to market some of my artist abroad to the South African people and communities who hunger for some traditional RSA music.
Can you assist me by referring me to the right people who arrange all the RSA events in Australia. We could really provide these artist at a fraction of the cost of the “Big Artists”.
Attached is a song we recorded for “Christi”!!

Thanks,

Rudy Fourie

Again unfortunately we cannot play you the song he sent to us but if there's anyone out there who is interested in supporting up and coming artists, please contact Rudi and arange something, I'm sure there will be support for them.

David Pocock & Eightytwenty Vision Dinner

Alison

It was a pleasure to speak with you earlier today.

As discussed, I am delighted to be organising a dinner to support Eightytwenty Vision, a not-for-profit organisation co-founded by David Pocock and Luke O’Keefe in 2009, which is providing sustainable solutions to extreme poverty in Nkayi, Zimbabwe.  David will be the guest speaker at the dinner.  (The dinner follows a very successful dinner for 300 people I organised last year with a small group of friends to support Geraldine Cox's orphanages in Cambodia.)

The programmes of Eightytwenty Vision focus on health (particularly maternal health), education, human rights and food security.  One of the most impressive initiatives has been the renovation of the birthing facilities at the local hospital so women no longer have to deliver on the dirt floor and significantly improved pre and post natal care is now available.  Further details of the organisation’s work are available at www.eightytwentyvision.org.

The Sunday Dinner by the River will be held at Moda Events, Portside, Brisbane on 28 August 2011, the night after the Wallabies play the All Blacks in the Bledisloe at Suncorp Stadium and just a couple of weeks before the start of the Rugby World Cup.

The list of auction items is looking impressive.  We have signed Reds, Wallabies, Springboks jerseys for the live auction and the final item should be confirmed in a week or so.  For the silent auction Mitch Ogilvie has donated a suit, Extreme Skate at Taringa is donating a longboard and helmet, Peter Fitzsimons is donating a set of his authored books and Dymocks has donated a signed copy of the new James Bond novel.  The remaining auction items will be confirmed and announced in the next couple of weeks.  Lexus has donated the loan of one of its vehicles for a weekend as the raffle prize.

Attached is the formal invitation to the dinner, together with the RSVP form.  It would be wonderful to see you at the dinner. Once completed, the RSVP form should be emailed to bridget@eightytwentyvision.org.

As discussed, we would be grateful if the Africa Club provided a copy of the invitation to its members.  Please feel welcome to forward the invitation to anyone else you think may be interested in attending.

If you would like any further details regarding the evening, please feel free to contact me.

I look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Warm regards
